Current Volunteer Opportunities (Unpaid Positions)
Medical needed for
Opportunity Description: Interning abroad on a medical project is an ideal way to observe how the poorest resourced medical institutions in the third world operate. Whether you are a pre-medical student, an undergraduate, or a trained professional, you will be able to gain great insight into the hospitals, clinics and centers that we work with. When possible, we can tailor internships both to a volunteer’s level of experience and their interests. You will be involved in the day-to-day running of hospitals and clinics, observing or sometimes directly assisting doctors and nurses. You might find yourself, for example, watching a caesarean in the operating room or working with a doctor on his rounds in a big city hospital. You can sometimes help out in simple but practical ways, vastly increasing your own knowledge and understanding of medical practice.

Nursing & Midwifery needed for
Opportunity Description: If you want to take up an internship abroad as a nurse or a midwife, we have a huge number of opportunities available. Whether you are hoping to get into the field, a trained professional looking for some work experience, or somewhere in-between, you will return with many experiences in one of the hospitals, clinics, orphanages, and disabled centers that we work with. Whenever possible, we tailor your internship to your level of experience and interests. By interning on this program, you will have a great opportunity to understand how health care systems work in a developing country. Hospitals and clinics are often understaffed, so depending on your education, experience level, and work capabilities you may be able to assist with duties such as bandaging, taking blood pressure and generally caring for the patients. If you work as a midwife at home, then you are likely to be located in a busy maternity clinic, helping both pre and post-natal patients, and assisting staff with deliveries on an internship overseas.

Dentistry needed for
Opportunity Description: Volunteering overseas on one of our dental placements is a fantastic way to gain practical experience in dentistry. Whether you are hoping to get into the field, a trained professional looking to gain some work experience, or somewhere in-between, you will have a role to play in one of the hospitals and clinics we work with. Each placement is tailored, where possible, both to a volunteer’s level of experience and their interests. Living in a developing country, you will witness first hand the impact of poverty on dental health. Dentists struggle to convey messages about even the very basics of oral hygiene, and this lack of education, combined with lack of financial resources, means that many patients you see will have considerably further advanced cases than you are likely to see in the western world. In India our volunteers work in Dental Clinics in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. In Argentina we have dental placements in a large hospital in Villa Allende, near Cordoba. In Mexico we work in small dental practices. Wherever you go and whatever size establishment you work with, you will experience something very different from what you are used to in the US, and you will come back with fantastic memories of far more than just your Dentistry Placement.

Physical & Occupational Therapy needed for
Opportunity Description: As a physical therapy intern, you are sure to be in great demand. Hospitals are often very poorly resourced with underpaid staff, and the combined lack of experience and funds to pay for treatment means the patients you encounter will often have advanced conditions that are rarely seen in the developed world. Our rewarding physical therapy internships enable you to help disabled children and adults to lead as normal lives as possible. Rehabilitation is vital, so whether you have experience or not, working alongside physical therapists in polio or leprosy clinics in India, a center for disabled children in Nepal, physical therapy departments of large hospitals in Ghana or a burns unit in Bolivia, you will learn a great deal about the practice of physical therapy in a completely different cultural setting. Our rewarding Occupational Therapy programs enable you to help sick or disabled children and adults to lead as normal lives as possible. Rehabilitation is vitally important for any productive community, but is often overlooked due to the lack of money available for investment in all but critical care. Occupational Therapy courses are rarely available in many of the countries where we have medical internships, so your skills are sure to be appreciated! These international medical internships are designed to provide a challenge to those who already have some experience or a worthwhile volunteer experience for those wishing to take their Occupational Therapy elective abroad. If you want to prove that you can think outside the box to create imaginative solutions to problems in a country where the facilities are much more basic than at home, then these projects are for you.
